2 Oct 1855 testimonial
Sergeant Major James Speryn of the 68th Regiment
Bengal Army having been transferred to the
Prueion[?] establishment in Europe after
completion of 21 years servitude, 12 of which
have been passed in the 68th Regiment. It affords
me great pleasure to bear testimony to his
very exemplary character and conduct
during the time he has been attached to the
68th. Having been Adjunct of the Corps for
10 years during which period Sergent
Major Sperryn has been under my
immediate orders, I have always found
him most zealous in the performance of his
numerous responsible duties, which have been
done in the most efficient manner, greatly
to his own credit and to the benefit of the
Corps of which he has been so long Sergeant
Major. He is a very correct writer, thoroughly
understanding every kind of Accounts
and as a writer and Accountant his services
have been most invaluable. I can speak
equally favourably of his private character
which has been unexceptionable in every respect
& the best testimony to which is the fact of
his having received a silver medal from
Goverment for Meritorious Service and conduct
during the period of his servitude.
Sergeant Major Sperryn bears a Medal of the
first Sikh war in which campaign he
served, also another for war with Burmah
in 1852.1853-
